ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM DANIELL R.A. (BRITISH 1769-1837): AN OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS 'THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR'

This painting depicting a battle scene, with names of ships to include H.M.S Victory inscribed along the bottom of the canvas. It depicts Vice-Admiral Collingwood’s flagship Royal Sovereign breaking the enemy line (ahead of Nelson in Victory and briefly exchanging fire with the French 80-gun third rate Indomptable) as she manoeuvres into position to engage the big Spanish flagship Santa Ana which capitulated soon afterwards. Collingwood was, of course, second-in command at Trafalgar and assumed overall command after Nelson’s death. This painting is possibly an oil sketch for a larger work by Daniell such as one of his two big-scale Trafalgar paintings exhibited at the British Institution in 1825, numbers 245 & 256.

Inscribed on the frame in black 'Wm. Daniell R.A'

105cm x 67cm

The painting has been historically relined, and is coming away from the stretcher towards the top of the picture.

With special thanks to Michael Naxton, Latterly Associate of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, Curator Emeritus, Ashcroft Medal Collection for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

Sold for £13,750
